Residence permits

Family reunification

Temporary permits:
Residence permits are normally granted for a limited period of time with a view to granting a permanent visa at a later stage if conditions are still met. Limited permits are usually granted for one year at a time.

Permanent residence permits:
Foreign citizens can apply for a permanent residence permit when they have held a temporary permit on the basis of family reunification and have legally stayed in the Faroe Islands during the last three years.

The basis on which the permit was originally granted must still exist, the applicant must have held a permit valid for the last three years, and conditions must not be broken. In addition to all this the applicant must not within a specified period of time have been sentenced to imprisonment or owe money to public authorities in the Faroe Islands (over DKK 90.000,54 - 2024 level) that is overdue.
